is it illegal to sell designer replicas as long as you make it clear that they are just replicas

As a Franchise Attorney I can say this. If you infringe on someone's intellectual property rights, it doesn't matter what you call it, it's still infringement. By saying they're replicas you are essentially admitting infringement. Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice.
