Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Tennessee
Renting Copyrighted Works
US Code Title 17 Section 106 specifies the rights of the copyright owner. Paragraph 3 states they have the right to ''distribute copies or phonorecords of the copyrighted work''. I have two questions:
1. When I buy a movie on DVD from Wal-mart, is it the copyrighted work or a copy of it?
2. If it's the copyrighted work, and not a copy or it, does that mean it is legal for me to sell, lend, or rent the movie?

Re: Renting Copyrighted Works
Of course it is a copy of the copyrighted work and you are not permitted to copy it, except as provided for in the act.
