Legal Question in Employment Law in Tennessee

Background check

The company i wrok for has given me a notification that i am to sign a release form to allow the company to do a criminal and grdit background check. I have worked for this company 6.5 years, and if i do not sign the form granting the permission, then i will not be eligible for any future raises,bonus,cost of living adjustments or considered for promotion. Is it legal for the company to withold future income if i do not sign the waiver ?

Yes, as long as they are not just asking folks in protected categories to do so as a harrassment tool.
