Legal Question in Employment Law in Tennessee
Demotion at Work
My company is downsizing and I was informed that the position I held as a District Manager Trainee (DMT) was being eliminated corporate wide. I was offered either a severance package or a demotion. Today I discovered that there are still DMT's in place. One that works in the district where I am supposed to be a store manager (that is my demotion). This person, was weeks behind me in the training process. In addition, I have received no negative feedback about my training and had actually been expedited through the process because I was doing so well. Do I have legal grounds to sue?

Re: Demotion at Work
It depends. In Tennessee, you are working in an employment at-will state. This means that as a general proposition, your employer can fire you for good, bad or no reason at all. However, this does not mean that your employer can fire or demote you for a reason that is discriminatory or retaliatory.
