Legal Question in Employment Law in Tennessee

can a employer take money from your check? my wife works at a foodland store for 1 year and in the past year once they toke 11 bucks out of her check because the cash till was short. then once for 10 because the cash till was over. Now after 1 year some how the next day shift is telling her that her cash till was short 294. bucks and called here at the house and left message saying she would have to pay for that out of her check. from what i recall when i was a student at mtsu in prelaw that this was not legal. advice or has the law changed in the past few years to allow employers to take earned wages out of there checks which i think is a way to immorally call there employees of theft...

advice thanks

andrew
