Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Tennessee

Abandoned property

Here the the twist. This really isn't Landlord & Tenant law. No agreement is made to rent. Only an offer of free shelter for ine day at a time is offered.

The question is at a non-profit homeless shelter what legal obligations does the shelter have concerning property which is left unaccompanied and is stolen? Here is another twist. Can the homeless shelter throw away the personal item left unaccompanied? Is there any obligation on the part of the shelter to find the owner?

The shelter has signs posted stating unaccompanied items will bge thrown away during normal cleanup hours 7:00 am to 9:00 a.m.. The clients even sign a statement stating they must keep their property under ther control. Lockers are rented to store items in for a fee of $14.00 per month. What obligation does the shelter have if a client refuses to rent a locker and allows their personal belongs to become unaccompanied?

Thank you for your response.

Re: Abandoned property

Based upon the facts presented, it would appear that the invitees waive their rights upon ackowledgment of the house rules - ie, the invitaation to reside is conditioned upon the invitee keeping their items with them.
