Changed lease after signing

Can a landlord add something to a lease after it has been signed? Our landlord wrote in the margins of our lease, changing the pet deposit, after it had been signed. Can he do this? If not, is there a specific law I could cite which says so?

They cannot - basic tenet of law. Changes must be signed by the party on whom the new duty is imposed.
