Re: landlord permission
I have to answer this question with a question: What does your lease say?
There may be specifically outlined restrictions in the lease that can answer this question. However, absent their being a clause in the lease that will give you guidance, as a tenant you have an obligation to (amoung other things) keep the part of the premises that you-as the tenant-occupy and use in a condition equal to that which existed when you took possession. With that in mind---you aren't talking about a little pool---a 4ft pool could create damage to the landscape, create a condition that compromises safety and could add additional insurance and premises liability issues.
If you are asking the question here---you already know that you should, in good faith-- be running that question by the property owner. With the landlord's consent---you could be relaxing in a cool 4ft pool of water, without it---well---it won't be nearly as much fun packing the pool in the back of a uhaul.
