I'm a member of the TN National guard. How can I get a transfer to another guard unit that is closer to my home address?

As a practical matter, the burden is on you to identify a unit that has a vacancy in its TO & E/T.D.A. (or an authorized overstrength) for your MOS / ASI / Grade. Then the gaining commander -- sometimes with a personal interview first -- must agree to take you in, and your existing unit must agree to let you go. The gaining unit requests the orders from NG HQ in Symrna, and off you go.

It used to be that simple. Now, with the steady drumbeat of deployments, the gaining and the losing units must consider where they are in their deployment cycle. For example, the 278th Armored Cav Regiment is preparing to go to CONUS training prior to a rotation into the sandbox. It will be nearly impossible to get released from those units, and if it is too late to fit into their predeployment training -- or if you are otherwise non-deployable -- impossible to transfer into those units.

The easy answer is to contact your S1/G1 at Battalion or higher headquarters, they can tap into the database of vacancies and have the most recent status of overstrength authorizations (usually 125%).
