Legal Question in Personal Injury in Tennessee

Is this defamation of character and or slander

I am a paramedic in a county in which that does not supply a paramedic service at all times. i do not work for that county , but I have responded to several incidents to where no medic was on the scene leaving me in an abondonment situation. Now the EMS service workers and the director of the service , even to the county executive has said remarks about me . i have recently had a problem arise with me being on the scene of a young childs untimely passing and the service employees and director are starting rumors in which is to say the least tarnishing my image as a medic . It is beginning to effect the way people see me as a paramedic and people losses trust in me . do i have a case for slander ?
