Legal Question in Personal Injury in Tennessee

My name was recently mentioned in a book about racism. I am a state police officer that was also a part time mayor. Lies were told that I was given special privileges because I was white. This is not true. Nothing was ever given to me, nor made easy for me. This section of the book can possibly harm my career and personal life. Are there any legal reprocussions for those who print untruths about others in books. The book is available for sale.

In order to carry a suit for libel, you must be able to prove that false statements were published about you and that you have been damaged as a result. The possibility that the statements "can possibly" harm your career is not sufficient to prevail. There must be actual damages attributable directly to the false statement(s) published. It's a heavy burden.
