Conditions for breaking an apartment lease

I currently have a 1 year lease; however, due to being needed back home by my family I must break the lease early and take a job in my home state. I am being told by the management company that even though I am paying a lease termination penalty of 1 month rent I cannot break this lease for any reason, and I must pay for the remaining months (approx 5000).

When you are moving for family / employment reasons how can they hold you to this?
