Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Tennessee

How to ''Defend'' a Civil Action

My husband and I have rented a house the last 12 years. It was owned by the elderly mother of our landlord.

Our landlord's niece & sister have started a civil action in Chancery Court and it lists my husband and myself along with our landlord as Defendants.

We have been issued a Summons to ''Defend a Civil Action'' filed against us, etc.

Why are we being included in this? I am close to sending a statement in writing saying, ''I received the Summons and am writing to Defend''. Period.

Can you tell me what it is I am defending? Does this require an attorney?

Any insight will be most appreciative.

Re: How to ''Defend'' a Civil Action

You were delivered a Complaint with the Summons.

The allegations in the Complaint are what you are defending against.

No one can tell you what you are defending against without reading the Complaint.

I would reccomend that you contact an attorney in your area.
