Legal Question in Traffic Law in Tennessee

Statue of Limitations

I am currently a resident of Alabama, I am uable to obtain drivers license in this state because of tennesse, I would like to know isn't there a statue of limitations on how long can a state hold you license under suspension or revokation. I do not owe any fines in the state of Alabama, but the department of public safety insist that I clear the state of Tennesse first, before I can get alabama license. It has been over ten years since my driving privliges has been revoked by the state of alabama, and 14 years for the state of tennesee. What can I do?

Re: Statue of Limitations

Getting your driver's license back can be a time consuming process. You must indeed clear the matters up with Tennessee first. You say that you haven't had a license from them in 14 years, but have you been driving any since then? If you have any recent convictions for driving without a license then Tennessee may not be willing to allow you to regain it. I know of some individuals who have basically been permanently banned from ever getting their driver's license back because they have repeatedly been caught without a license. However, if you have no recent convictions, you can ask the state of Tennessee to restore your driver's privilege, but you will probably have to clear up any past unpaid tickets and/or fines. If the matter for which your license was suspended is more serious, then you might be able to request a hearing, but that will cost you attorney fees. I would contact the State of Tennessee and find out what you need to do to get your driving privileges restored. Outside of that, you can do nothing in Alabama - or any other state for that matter, because as soon as you apply, they will check and find out the Tennessee problem. Good luck.
