You should be able to get help from your local VA office. It is doubtful you will get any help on the phone. The level of knowledge will depend on the benefits you are trying to find out about. The problem is there are many programs that provide for widows benefits but each program has its own set of rules and regulations. In order to advise you I would have to know which benefit you are wanting to apply for.

Was the veteran disabled due to service connected disabilities and was the veteran's death due to those disabilities?

Was the veteran a prisoner of war?

Did the veteran servie one day during a war period and 90 days of active duty and the widow is disabled?

The answers depend on your answers to the above questions.
