Retainer Agreements

I am considering hiring an attorney to pursue a civil claim/charge. The area would be employment law. The attorney I consulted with has a $3,000 retainer fee. My friend, who is also an attorney, said I should be wary of a retainer agreement. He says: but for civil litigation, if the lawyer chooses to charge a fee, it is an indication they don't think there is a lot there. Is this true?

Without knowing more, I would not know. However, we handle 90% of our cases on contingency but when there are questions of fact such as normally arise during employment issues, we charge a retainer because generally we have only heard one side and after discovery...we have lost thousands in time and expenses.
