what is the difference between filing chapter 7 and chapter 13- how long does each stay on your credit report

Rather than repeat what somebody has written, I would suggest that you explore this site's resources for detailed information. Basically, Chapter 7 is "liquidation" of your debts, and Chapter 13 is "repayment". Bankruptcy filings remain on credit reports for 10 years, generally.
