if someone sue's me and I file bankruptcy, am i still liable to pay?

Generally no. However some debts are not dischargeable in bankuptcy. For example, if you murder someone, a wrongful death action is not dischargeable in bankrupcty. Also, if you owe money and have pledged collateral to pay the loan, you will still have to pay that person the value of that collateral or lose the collateral.
