It depends. Do you want to incorporate, have a d/b/a or an LLC?

At a bare minimum, you can file a ficticious name application to allow you to do business in another name. This means that you are personally liable for the obligations of the business--there is no difference between you and the business.
Otherwise, you can form an entity to run your business (preferred), such as an LLC (limited liability company) or a corporation (inc.).
