How long to you have to file a mechanic lein against a contractor?

There is no short simple answer to your question. It depends upon whether the property is homestead or non-homestead, whether you are an original contractor, whether you are a subcontractor or sub-subcontractor, whether you are a materialman, whether it involves specially fabricated materials, whether you have sent out required notices, and whether a payment bond has been filed with the county clerk. Also, certain notiices may be required to preserve the lien. Additional relief may be available for constitutional liens. Finally, you may be out of luck if it is a homestead. If any significant amount is involved, you should contact an attorney or you are likely to be left holding an empty sack.
