payment of invoice on the due date; is liability paid by the due date if payment is sent via a common carrier, (US Mail) by the date the invoice is due to the creditor?

There is a commonly-held notion that one has made a timely payment if he drops a letter into a mailbox on the due date. This is false. If you read your contract (or promissory note) you'll find that the requirement is that the creditor RECEIVE payment on or before the due date.
Sometimes there will be a "grace period" spelled out in the contract (or note).
