Re: small business

Whatever business you engage in, I strongly recommend that you form a limited liability entity, such as a corporation or limited liability company, to help protect your personal assets from your business liabilities.

Whether you operate two businesses through the same entity is an issue to discuss with your attorney. Depending on the type of liability exposure, you may want to have two separate entities, so that the assets of one business are separated from any liability caused by the other. That being said, there can be many legal and practical advantages to operating both businesses through the same entity - for example, all of your employees would be employed by the same company which may result in a better deal on health insurance, etc.

Any attorney who works with small businesses can help you, and can introduce you to other local professionals. As a general rule, smaller firms generally charge lower rates and are more flexible and responsive to the needs of a small business owner.
