Familarize yourself with the employment statutes

First, use common sense. Second, focus on the issues that may arise in your company setting. You can identify legal issues and address them by reading up on ADA and Title VII (visit www.EEOC.gov and read the primer on age discrimination and employment law for small businesses). You should definitely read about the Fair Labor Standards Act by visiting www.DOL.gov. Basically, you need to read all the federal and state employment and labor statute that you are mandated to post in the common area at work. If you are bound to abide by these laws, it makes sense to read them. That should give you a head start on what is legal about your company policies. After you have made a final draft, hire a labor and employment lawyer to review it and consult with you.
