Using handguns as protection of property and life.

I just recently purchased a handgun .What exactly are the legal "Do's and Don'ts" on using it to protect yourself from robbery or bodily harm?

Probably the most important first thing is to enroll in a gun handling and safety course taught by an NRA certified instructor.

Secondly, carrying a concealed handgun is illegal in every state in the union when done without a permit.

The laws of self-defense require that you exert only that force necessary to protect yourself and your loved ones, and that may include deadly force if the threat of death is there. Many folks run afoul of the law in this area, however, as judging when deadly force is required can be tricky.

One may not use deadly force to protect one's property. The penalty for robbery is not death.
