Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Texas

What are your legal rights at the age of 17 as far as who you can live with?

I was told that I could do what I want at the age of 17. Besides buying tabacco products and such. I want to live with someone my mother refuses to let me live with. She won't even let me see that person because of problems in the past. I need to know what I am allowed to do at this age(17).

You never get to do whatever you want; this is juvenile thinking.

What you may be referring to is the request for emancipation. It's a waste of time if you're 17 now, because by the time you get through the system, you might be 18 anyway. Why not just wait?

Emancipation is NOT easy to get at yoru age, because you have to prove that you CAN take care of yourself. It means that legally you are no longer entitled to the protection of your parents, and they are no longer required to do ANYTHING for you.

I suspect that you need to talk to a family counselor about how to work with your parents. Their rules are not encessarily designed to cause you misery, they might just have a good reason, based on their experience, as to why their rules are what they are.

Once you HAVE to take care of yourself, you'll see that it's not just a matter of doing what you want: you will have many more obligations and responsibilities than you probably appreciate: enjoy being young while you can.
