A seventeen year old not allowed to attend a public school

To whom it may concern,

I am seventeen, I live with my parents, and have never been expelled from, or caused any serious problems in a school or any other place. Last year, before the end of the first semester, I dropped out of school, at the urging of my principal, to take the General Educational Development test, but changed my mind and decided to finish school.

However, since the beginning of the new school year the principal of the public, and government funded school that i attended before dropping out and am trying to attend again has refused to allow me to register. I have not even been given a reason besides, ''As the principal I can choose who to allow in my school''.

I have spoken to a school counselor who informs me that this isn't legal, but I'm not sure what my options are.

What should I do?

Of course your principal cannot arbitrarily decide who to deprive of a public education. If I were you I would contact the local American Civil Liberties Union. Students rights is one of their major concerns.
