This is a consumer law question not a Civil Rights issue. You need to call the Houston Volunteer Lawyers's Association or the Gulf Coast Legal Foundation. Good luck.

If you don't answer the suit, opposing counsel will most likely take a default judgment against you. He or she may then proceed to obtain a writ of execution to satisfy the judgement.
A good strategy would be that you answer the suit and attempt to settle the matter with the creditor.
Nonetheless, since you have a homestead exemption I cannot see how they could execute against your home. However, it is likely that this bad debt could affect your credit rating and if it hasn't already. Furthermore, execution could be made against any other assets you own now or in the future. Depending on how large the debt is, it may make sense to think about bankruptcy. Yet, this would only make sense if you have excessivly high debts.
As for the hiring an attorney, negotiating a settlement does not have to be expensive. Although fighting a lawsuit, most assuredly would be.
Whatever you do, you should get some legal advice promptly.
