Legal Question in Technology Law in Texas

Unauthorized email access

I have a live in gorl friend who has through watching me log into my accounts acquired my passwords. I did not provide them, she then has since logged into my computer and have deletd files and also logged into my email and has sent email identifying herself but under my email to people in my address book. Is this illegal? I have proof she sent it and she signed her name at the bottom of the email identifying herself.

Re: Unauthorized email access

You need to secure your computer, couldn't agree more. There are lots of ways to do it without buying a new computer.

And, if your live-in girlfriend is that troublesome, one of you needs to move out because trouble is in the wind.

But, since you knew she saw you enter your password, and she had access to the computer, and did bad things with your knowledge (if she did it once, shame on her; if she did it twice, shame on you), then it's not that clear that she invaded your privacy in a legal sense.

Definitely a borderline case, because she's going to argue that you *knew* she had access and didn't change the log-in information.

She has violated your privacy, but the simplest solution is to password protect your computers, change your passwords (ALL of them)and possibly your girlfriend.
