After havig $5000 dollars worth of property stolen from my home I went to buy a shot gun.I was denied because I had a class a misdemeanor in 2002.How can I legally protect my family and property?

Certain misdemeanor cimes can invalidate your right to own or possess a firearm; such as. Assualt Bodily Injury cases involving a family member. See 18 United States Code 922(g) - it prohibits a person convicted of family violence from owning or possessing a firearm. This also includes deferred type probations; it is possible to get your rights back under some circumstances through an application process with US ATFE. You need to consult with a federal criminal defense attorney for specifics.
