Legal Question in Construction Law in Texas

Paid Contractor, Sub was not paid by Contractor am I liable?

I had a contractor convert a room into a garage - I have paid the contractor in full some months ago. Now I have the gentleman who supplied the garage door to my contractor asking us to pay the bill or he will put a lien to my house. I have no contract with this subcontractor, but want to know what right does he have to go after me if he was not paid by my contractor?

The idea behind the lien laws is that it's better for a laborer or material supplier to be paid than the property owner having to pay twice. The subcontractor has as much right to put a lien on your property as the general contractor would have if not paid.

However there are a number of statutory hoops he has to jump through before he can do that, and if he doesn't jump properly, the lien won't attach.
