Legal Question in Consumer Law in Texas

Auto Mechanic Shop Problem

I took my truck into a mechanic shop to get a alternator replaced. I asked what type of warranty they offered? I was told the alternator came with a lifetime warranty. Two years later the alternator is going out. I returned back to the same mechanic shop, informed them that the alternator is going out and I would like it replaced. I was told that my warranty was no longer valid because the company that they purchased the alternator from were no longer in business. I explained to the shop owner that I did not enter into a contract with the alternator company and that they (the alternator company) did not sell me the alternator nor did they guarantee me a lifetime warranty. My question ''Is the mechanic shop responsible for making the alternator good by law. My receipt doesn't mention the alternator company at all.

Does your receipt warrant the product? If the shop gave you a warranty, then they will have to stand by it -- if the warranty was from the manufacturer, then you will have to address the problem with the manufacturer.

Re: Auto Mechanic Shop Problem

There is a difference between a manufactures warranty vs. workmanship warranty. It sounds to me that, the responsible party is in fact the manufacturer, not the shop. Since the same goes for the shop, they do not manufacture alternators, they place them on cars, how could they warrant it. Now, if you are talking about the workmanship of the shop placing the alternator, then yes they would be responsible.
