disputeing credit
when disputeing a account already in collecttion should I send the dispute letter to the collection company or the original company the account was with???

Written notice should be sent to the debt collector and it is recommended that it be sent via certified mail, return receipt requested. It never hurts to CC the original creditor via the same method. Keep a copy of the letter and all postage documents for your records. Your letter may stop most but not all direct contact by the debt collector. Further, your letter may not absolve the debt. The original creditor or the debt collector may file suit if they believe the debt is true and correct.
However, the debt collector has specific requirements that must be followed according to the Texas Debt Collection Act and the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. It is recommended reading.
