rent

I signed a ''1 year lease'' in 2002 to help my daughter''and family move into an apt. They are now being evicted for not paying the rent (5 years later) They are calling me for the back rent. Who is financialy responsible?

Most likely you are, since it's your name on the lease. But without a lawyer going over the lease terms I can't say for sure.

Many leases contain a provision that allow the lease to be extended past the one year mark if everyone agrees. If this was done under the original lease, without signing a new lease, you would be liable.

If, however, at some point, your daughter signed a new lease without your signature, it is highly unlikely that they can go after you for the back rent.

I would echo Mr. Bradie's advice -- take any leases that might be governing this situation to a lawyer and seek their advice regarding the specific provisions contained in that lease.
