winner of grant - home improvment

I recieved in the mail a winning notice from Household Finance Inc. that I have won 48.000 in a entry when I shop at certain stores. They sent me a check for 4900 and told me to send 2900 to an agent who will then process the rest and go ahead and keep the other 1800. The check is legitimate according to the bank.

What do you think?

When ever you have to forward money to get a "prize" you are dealing with a scam. There is no reason for that to be a requirement in a legitimate transaction. What will you do when the check you got bounces and yours doesn't?

I completely agree with Mr. Nance. Take the 'check' to the bank for collections. Do not spend a dime on yourself or anyone else. After a month or so, the bank will certify the funds as collected, or will have a case to prosecute for police.

It's a scam. The check for $4900 is a counterfeit and will ultimately bounce, leaving you on the hook for the $2900 you sent, plus any money you drew out against the balance.

Do you really think that shopping at certain stores will automatically enter you in a sweepstakes? How often do you give the checkout clerk your name and address?
