Legal Question in Consumer Law in Texas

Well over a year ago I cancelled a membership at my gym LA fitness..I had my friend on my account and went to the gym manager and told him to remove my friend from my account. He was moving out of the area and had an injury....Well I just found out today that I have been getting billed on this every since..There has been no activity on this account for almost a year and a half...Which I tried to explain...They told me that without a cancellation form they could not help me...I then asked why the manager at the gym told me this was handled when it went against there own policy..They could not answer..And I would have never known, had I not suspended my own account for an additional $50.00 and realized I was still being billed...This just seems like shady business practices....What are my options.

1. The health clubs are shady operators. They are sweet and polite when they want you to sign up, and when you try to cancel, you find yourself dealing with the Mafia.

2. You should contact your credit card company (the one that's been paying the health club fees) and try to get the charges reversed or "charged back."

3. To cover yourself, you should sit down and write a letter to LA Fitness and spell out everything that happened. Do not call them; do not send an email; send a paper letter with a 44-cent stamp on it. Keep a copy. And mail copies to each and every business address you have for LA Fitness. Send a copy also to your credit card company. And send a copy to these folks also:

Office of the Attorney General

Consumer Protection Division

PO Box 12548

Austin, TX 78711-2548

4. Read your LA Fitness contract very, very carefully (this will give you a headache AND a stomach ache). You might find something there that will be helpful to you.
