Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

15 year old debt to university

Just yesterday my husband got a call from a collection agency that said he owed a university $1800 for a semester of school plus collection fees from 1993. This school gave him an athletic scholarship to play football. Before the season started he tore his ACL during practice with the university football team. He went home before classes even started to have knee surgery and rehab. He never attended one day of class. The university did not pay for his surgery or rehab but they want him to pay for classes that he did not attend. We have already contacted the university and they will not let him out of this debt because they said his official withdrawal date on record is at the end of the fall semester. Of course we have no record of when he actually withdrew because this was 15 years ago. It also seems strange to me that we have not heard anything about this debt until now. Is there anything we can do about this?

Re: 15 year old debt to university

Statute of limitations is 4 years..so drop them a line..denying the claim and if further contact is made, they could be liable for violation of fair debt collections...or just ignore them..
