Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas
While I was on active duty, back in 2006, I had a judgement filed against me. I was hopitalized and had no access to a phone or other means to contact the court to let them know I would not be able to attend court. So I lost the case, obviously. Well now I am trying to take responsibility for the debt and get it paid off so that it can get off of my credit eventually, but I cannot get any answers about the debt, or how to pay it, or how to pay it. I am just not sure what my rights are or what I can do or who I can contact about the whole mess to get it taken care of. I am also not sure if I can talk to JAG seeing as I am married to a soldier currently. I do not think that paying fees for a lawyer are worth it seeing as the debt is like $1500. I just want to get it taken care of, but I cannot get the lawyers that sued me to talk to me to tell me how to pay it and I have had no correspondance since then to know what steps to take.

If you know to whom the debt is owed (i.e., the party that sued you), you should try talking directly with them. What occurred at court is that you had a "default judgment" taken against you when you didn't appear. "Post judgment interest" is accruing. Occassionally, unscrupulous people wil let a judgment sit and generate this interest for a while before there is an actual attempt to collect the judgment amount. You need to be aware of such things. You should also contact the court that gave the default judgment so that you can request a copy.
