Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas
Apartment Charging Both Me and X-Roommate
An old roommate and I moved out of an apartment complex and I later found out he had not paid the utility bills for over six months. The apartment complex charged us, but it went directly to collections. The amount owed was $1,202.46. My x-roommate settled the amount for half, but they still want to charge me the other half. Being that we were on a 'joint' lease are they able to do this? It was my understanding that if one person pays it, then it is paid for both. (That is what happened in another case of mine.) I paid nearly $3,000.00 (which was half) and the debt was removed off my credit and the joint lease holders credit, too. Please help me! Thank you.

That only works if they pay, or compromise and settle, the whole thing. If the ex only settled their portion, you're on the hook for the other half.
