Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

my bf wrote me a check for 40,000 to pay off some debt, with the understanding that we would move in together. This was going to require me to quit my job, move out of state, etc. I reluctantly accepted the money. We remained together, until recently. He knew I had no means to repay this money, but now is sayin that it was a loan. All he has is the canceled check, made out to me. We entered no written agreement whatsoever. Can he legally do anythinig to me, to force me to pay him this money, without a written agreement?
