Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

When an ex boyfriend owes you money!

I was with someone for two years and we had a credit card together. After we split up, he promised to help me pay on this credit card .. most of which he charged. He paid a little here and there, but nothing to ever amount to anything. He now has a wife and wishes to put this debt in the past which is ruining my credit. He refuses to pay! Is there anything at all I can do in order to make him help me pay on this credit card. Unfortunately I have no receipts from where is charged most of what is on the card. Maybe the credit card company has a record of where he signed?? I dont know .. I am just in desperate need of some advise! What options do I have, if any??

Thank you

If the card was granted to both of you on the basis of both of your incomes and promises to pay, then you are on the hook as well as he is. You can call the card company to cancel the card and cut your losses. The card company will expect to have the balance paid, though.

If the card was granted to you with him as authorized user, you can at least terminate the authorization but you're on the hook for all charges prior to the termination. If the card was issued to him with you as authorized user, he's reponsible for all charges.

If you petition for chapter 7 bankruptcy and discharge is granted, you will likely be released from this debt. However, that filing will have much broader implications.

If you are the cardholder, you are responsible for payment. You can request documentation from the card issuer by disputing the account and requesting the appropriate paper work. At that point you may have sufficient proof to sustain a legal claim agaonst your ex. Such is the price of love's labor lost.
