Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas
breaking apartment lease
I broke an apartment lease agreement 1 month before I was to sign a new one. The reason being I was raped in that apartment and had to move for my safety. It was my next door neighbor. Now the apartment complex is coming after me for money because I broke that lease. Do I still owe this balance? I felt my safety threatened. I made a police report and I advised the apartment complex why I was moving.

Re: breaking apartment lease
Unfortunately you are responsible for the last month's unpaid rent. However, it may be worthwhile speaking with a personal injury attorney about the possibility of negligent security on the apartment complex's part, and see if they really want to proceed with their lawsuit.
