Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

check collections

I wrote a check to an individual who altered the amt and presented it at several locations, attempting to cash it. One of the employees at a gas station where he attempted to cash the check alerted me to the problem, and I placed a stop payment on the check. The individual did cash the check at a grocery store, and now the store is sending me collection notices, saying that I must honor the check. Am I responsible for the check, and does this store have any right to demand that I pay them back?

Re: check collections

You are not responsible for an altered check. Tell them to look for the individual that presented the check to them, and explain that the amount shown on the check was altered from the amount you ordered paid.
