We own a small business and need advice when people/businesses do not pay their bill or write us hot checks.

If they write you a hot check, send it to the DA's office. If they won't pay what they owe, sue them for the debt. You will have to decide what the cut-off is for the amount you want to sue for. Usually, an attorney will take these cases on a contingency if you pay the costs and expenses. Again, you and the attorney will have to decide on the minimum amount you want to pursue. You might want to take some National Assoc. of Credit Mgmt. classes about extension of credit.
