Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Contract employee question

Hello,

I do not know if I'm in the right law area, but my question does concern a debt, so that is why I'm posting here.

I am a contract employee whose contract expired 3/1. I have continued working on the project with the promise of an extension coming soon.

The company I was contracted with is 40+ days late making the final payment of $10,000. There are rumors that the company has stopped paying their bills.

What recourse do I have to collect my $10,000?

The tricky part is that there is at least 2+ months more of work and I have been promised an additional $40,000 to complete the project.

As this is my only form of income at the moment, I am torn between letting the company know that I am looking for another job and continuing to work for free basically under the promise that I'll get an extension.

Can you help me?

Signed...

Re: Contract employee question

If your contract ended 03/01/07 and payment is now 40 days out, I'd sure stop working and find other employment. If they won't respond to you or any inquiry as to payment, your only recourse is to sue them for the money.

Keep in mind that if they've stopped paying their bills, it's usually because they're broke. A judgment against a bankrupt company usually isn't worth the paper it's printed on.
