Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

co-signed student loan

I co-signed a student loan ($30,000.00 plus) for my son-in-law and now my daughter is divorceing him and the loan is for 240 months. Can I get my name off the loan?

What are my rights?

Re: co-signed student loan

You have the same rights as any other cosigner, you should read the documents that you signed, and if confusing, contact a lawyer to review and explain them to you. Your obligation will not go away. If he fails to repay the loan, then you will be responsible. Most student loans have heavier consequences for nonpayment than most debts (garnishment etc).
