Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Credit bureau collections reporting

I have an unsecured HSBC loan that I could not pay. It was charged off a couple (maybe more) years ago. Since that time, the debt has sold several times to various collection agencies. Due to the large amount and them not working with me I have not been able to pay. Problem/question being that each collection agency is reporting to the credit bureau. So it appears on my report that I have 3 or 4 different unpaid debts instead of the original one. Can they do that?
