Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Credit Bureau Start Dates

I have an old debt actually opened in Jan. 1999. That debt recently sold to a collection agency and they are listing the open date on the balance as Sept. 2006. Will this cause this to stay on my record for another 7 years, and is it legal for them to do this? I went through a family tragedy a few years back and several of the old bad debts as showing this way. If it is legal, is there any way they will ever go away?

Re: Credit Bureau Start Dates

The debt will stay on your credit report seven years from the date of last activity. Date account was opened is irrelevant. The statute of limitations to file suit to collect on a debt is 4 years in Texas.
