Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas
Credit Card Debt
I have outstanding credit card debt that I am unable to pay. I have not used these credit cards in over 3 years but I am also unable to make payments towards them since my income has changed drastically since my divorce. I can not afford the interest they charge, the late charges and it seems that I am getting deeper and deeper in debt. When I attempt to talk to them about a minimal amout that I can pay, they won--name removed--accept it and say they want a lump sum as a good faith gesture. I cannot borrow from my mother which is disabled and I have no family here in Texas. I was told they can file a judgement against me that could be up to ten times what I owe them. Is this true? And if so, how am I ever going to get out of debt?

Re: Credit Card Debt
They may get a judgment for the principal, interest, court costs, and attorney fees. It won't be 10 times what you owe, but it could well be a multiple, what with their rate of interest.
I'd recommend talking with Consumer Credit Counseling Service about resolving the debt. They may be able to help.
