Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Old Credit Card debt

I received a letter in the mail stating that I owed about $5,000 on a credit card debt that only had a limit of $500. I looked at past credit reports and the debt is nowhere on there. I believed that the debt was settled but the person on the phone said this amount is due to finance and late charges.

I have recently moved and believe that I have a letter from the credit card company asking me to transfer the balance onto another card and the amount is nowhere near $5,000. It is around $500 to $700.

I believe the card was open 1997 and later closed in 1999. If I should find that letter and it turns out to be the correct account number - how should I handle disputing this debt?

Re: Old Credit Card debt

If you can find that letter, send it to the collection agency and tell them to take your name off their list. Send the letter CMRRR.

Send a copy of the letter, if you can find it, write to the collection agency and state that you dispute the debt, demand proof, and that action on the debt itself is barred by limitations. Send it certified mail, return receipt requested.
