Credit repair

I have old debts on my credit report and I am considering contacting a credit repair company. My question is can such compaines really repair a persons credit?

Credit repair companies cannot do anything more than you can, legally. You might consider contacting a credit counseling company, like First Stone Credit Counseling.

Ms. Campbell is correct. Additionally, some of these businesses advertise as credit repair, but are not. I know of two specific instances where the person paid thousands of dollars to the company to 'settle' the debts. Very little of the money actually went to the creditor. They both got sued anyway, and their credit was worse than when they started.

True credit counseling services are non-profit. A legitimate can be located through your local better business bureau.
